FAQs

1. What is the difference between NYSC Exemption Certificate and Discharge Certificate?

The NYSC Discharge Certificate is issued to corps members who successfully complete the one-year mandatory service under the National Youth Service Corps.

On the other hand, an Exemption Certificate is given to graduates who are not eligible for service, such as those who:

Are above 30 years at the time of graduation

Have served in the armed forces or paramilitary agencies

Have certain health conditions

2. How can I collect my NYSC Discharge or Exemption Certificate in 2026?

For the Discharge Certificate, it is usually issued at the end of the Passing-Out Parade (POP). Corps members must collect it at their state of service.

For the Exemption Certificate, it is typically processed and sent to the graduate’s institution for collection. Graduates are required to:

Visit their school’s Student Affairs Division

Present valid identification

Sign for collection

Some institutions may also notify graduates once the certificates arrive.

3. What should I do if I lose my NYSC Discharge or Exemption Certificate?

If your certificate is lost, stolen, or damaged, you must apply for a replacement through the National Youth Service Corps. The process usually involves:

Obtaining a police report

Swearing an affidavit in a court of law

Writing an application letter to NYSC

Submitting supporting documents (e.g., ID, passport photograph)

For Discharge Certificates, the replacement is handled directly by NYSC, while Exemption Certificate issues may involve your institution.

4. Can I request a correction or reprint of my NYSC certificate?

Yes, corrections or reprints can be requested if there are errors in your name, date of birth, or other details. Applicants must:

Submit a formal request through the NYSC portal or office

Provide evidence of the correct information (e.g., WAEC/NECO results, admission records)

Approval depends on verification by the National Youth Service Corps, and processing time may vary.
